SD stands for Secure Digital, and is the standard format developed and maintained by the SD association, to ensure uniformity across digital media storage. Since the original release of the SD card, there have been a number of expansions and additions, with SDHC and SDXC expanding the size capacity, and mini and micro versions being developed to provide memory storage for smaller devices.
Standard SD card capacities range from 4MB to 2GB, though some specialist SD cards can expand to 4GB. All SD cards over 2GB are referred to as SDHC, and those over 32GB as SDXC. SD cards have varying write speeds, and can usually be adapted to read only mode. They can be used for storing photos, videos and other files.
The next iteration of the SD range will be SDUC cards, also know as SD Express memory cards. This new SD 7.0 specification will extend the potential maximum SD memory card capacity up to 128TB. As well as beefing up capacity, the SDUC cards will be so fast and advanced they will be able to compete with removable SSD's.
